Penelope is the CEO of Auto Advisor Inc. and a research/reporter based in Seattle, Washington. Ashly was raised in New York, New York and attended Franconia College majoring in Documentary filmmaking and pre-med.
In 1976 Knapp moved to Seattle, Washington. After selling cars for Volkswagen, Mazda and Chrysler, he realized there was a need for accurate consumer automotive information. As a result, in July of 1977, he founded Auto Advisor, Inc.
The research-based firm, unlike any other of its type is designed to disseminate accurate consumer information in a holistic fashion. The company's dedication is to keep alive consumer education and market competition, both losing ground throughout the 1980s.
The company, now in its 29th year, has developed a dedicated clientele who utilize the services and spread the word. Business has been built primarily by word of mouth and over 60% of business is by referral. In 1989, the company went nationwide with the nation's first car-by-phone service, where you can order your car to be picked up at a local dealer.
The concept of Auto Advisor, Inc. is to stop problems before they occur through researched information and proper decision-making. Auto Advisor, Inc. has become the best way to achieve the greatest value in a vehicle with the lowest risk.
As head of company research, Mr. Knapp studies all aspects of car ownership. Each year he travels to meet with automakers and learns from the designers and engineers. He test drives their offerings for first-hand research.
Ashly has contributed to many publications including: the Automobile Association of America's "Washington Motorist," "Money Magazine," Pacific Northwest Magazine," Reuters International, "Automotive News," "Puget Sound Business Journal," "CEO Washington," "Cash Savers," "Seattle Business Magazine," "Northwest Motor," "Puget Sounding," and the "Chinese Post."
He has made numerous television appearances as an automotive expert on: "The Dick Klinger Show," "KCTS," "Seattle Today" (a.k.a. "Good Company"), "Top Story," "Flash," all in the Seattle, Washington area. He has also appeared on: "People are Talking" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and on ABC's "Home," CNN's "Daywatch," CNBC and recently on the "Oprah Winfrey Show."
Knapp currently hosts an automotive radio show on the ABC affiliate in Seattle, Washington called "KOMO's Auto Advisor." Other radio appearances and show hostings have included: KZAM, KISW, KXRX KING 1090 and KUOW.
He has also spoken to many associations and organizations. And teaches at the University of Washington.
